Tenderfeet: New Building Gallery |
These are pictures of the Tenderfeet school building.
Four rooms in all are being occupied.
Two larger rooms (10 ft x 20 ft) are used as classrooms. One of the smaller rooms (10 ft x 10 ft) is used as a kitchen, the other is the same size and is used for the school office.
A diagram of the school layout can be found at this link.
Update: November 18, 2007, a refrigerator, cupboards, a kerosene stove, office desk, and mattresses for the beginner (3 year olds) class naptime were donated by the Florence Hyam Trust of London. Deepest thanks to Jane Nyambu for coordinating the purchases and visiting the school. Pictures of the cupboards and desk are coming soon.
Generous donations by Kathy Switzer and friends have paid for windows and running water. Read more about Kathy's visit here.
The charity Tigers Go assisted with plywood wall construction costs.

| New Items (November 18, 2007) |
This refrigerator will ensure leftover food doesn't get wasted. |
Charcoal has gotten expensive lately so using this new kerosene stove will keep costs down. |
The youngest children will be taking naps on these mattresses. |

| Water and Windows (May 31, 2007) |
Kathy and Frank admire the wonderful flow of water. |
Now the teachers will no longer have to haul water in each day in heavy jugs. |
An elevated pipe and faucet will be fitted for accessibility. This water will aid in food preparation and hygeine for the children |
Frank works on the installation of the glass windows with decorative security bars, keeping dust, rain, and mosquitoes out. |
| Edwin applies the sealing putty around the glass. |
Guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. |

| Finishing Classrooms (April 27th) |
A completed classroom. Ready at last for the kids to start school! |
Volunteers put walls in for the new kitchen. |
Edwin installs overhead lighting. In the past, kids had to rely on sun- light coming through the wall cracks. |
The school latrine. This is a luxury in Kibera. Without it, the conditions near the building would be unsanitary. |
| |
| Plywood Installation (April 25th) |
Mike, a volunteer, works on the walls. He's a guardian of a former Tenderfeet student and wanted to help. |
Margaret and Mike enjoy the new plywood installation. The other volunteer is Mike's friend. |
The plywood will protect the children from dangerous exposed metal walls. |
| |
| Installation of the Floors (April 12th) |
A shot of the dirt floors, soon to be covered in cement. These floors would turn to mud every heavy rain. |
The materials for the floor had to be brought over in wheelbarrows from nearby. Here, Edwin Angote pitches in. |
| Edwin helps get the ball rolling. |
| A worker smooths out the cement. |
| A sealing layer is installed. |
| The finished product, ready for the kids! |
What a relief to have this important step completed! |
